Conditionals transformations test more than whether you remember the second or third conditional. You also need to recognise different ways of expressing conditions, possibilities and regrets. These ten B2 First transformations practise those changes through the topic of mobile phones.

Contents
Would, could and might
When we imagine a different past, use if + past perfect, followed by would, could or might have + past participle.
If I had charged my phone, I would have received your message. That would have been the result.
If I had charged my phone, I could have called you. I would have been able to call.
If I had charged my phone, I might have called you. Perhaps I would have called.
Sometimes the result is in the present. Then we use would + base verb:
If I had backed up my photos, I would still have them now. I didn’t back them up, so they’re gone.
Other useful patterns
| Expression | What to remember |
| provided (that) | Introduces a condition: You can borrow it provided you return it tonight. |
| unless | Means “except if”: I can’t download it unless I’m connected to Wi-Fi. |
| should | Can replace if in a more formal condition: Should your phone break, contact the shop. |
| in case | Explains a precaution: Save a copy in case you lose your phone. |
| wish + past perfect | Expresses regret: I wish I hadn’t spent so much. |
The worksheet also practises if it hadn’t been for and run the risk of. Read the whole sentence before deciding which pattern fits.
The materials
Complete the ten transformations using two to five words, including the word given. Don’t change the key word. Afterwards, compare answers and explain how each new sentence keeps the original meaning.
